Built for this moment.
Two years ago, a group of Portland-based food security organizations came together with a shared vision: to build a stronger, more equitable, locally-rooted food system to support our neighbors. That collaboration became the Coalition to Advance Food Equity (CAFE)— and it was built for this moment.
Today, as Oregon faces deep cuts to federal programs like SNAP and the USDA's Local Food Purchasing Assistance grants, more families are struggling to put food on the table. CAFE's partners are stepping up to fill the gap, joining forces to stretch limited resources further, strengthen local supply chains, and ensure that every neighbor has access to fresh, nourishing food.
What We Do
Collaborative Operations
Our foundational ethos is one of cooperation over competition. We share food, staff, and volunteer pools to streamline operations and ensure we are getting the most quality food possible to those who need it.
Unified Voice
We speak as a collective in meetings with local elected officials and cross-sector leaders to uplift our shared message and shed light on the state of hunger in Portland. We believe that amplifying community needs is the first step toward lasting, systemic change.
Centralized Purchasing
Through a pilot project generously funded by the Zidell Family Foundation, Marie Lamfrom Foundation, Harbourton Foundation, and an anonymous donor, CAFE is embarking on a bulk purchasing project that will help keep pantry shelves stocked while strengthening the operational supports needed to build a more local, values-aligned food sourcing model.
Who We Are
CAFE comprises ten pantry, gleaning, and food systems organizations: Community for Positive Aging, Lift Urban Portland, Neighborhood House, Oregon Health and Sciences University Moore Institute, Oregon Health and Sciences University Student Pantry, Portland Fruit Tree Project, Portland State University Student Pantry, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Urban Gleaners, William Temple House.

Why Your Support Matters
CAFE was designed for times like these. When federal safety nets fray, local collaboration becomes our strongest defense against hunger.
Your gift strengthens shared purchasing, operations, and advocacy efforts that keep food flowing to our neighbors - from students and working families to seniors on fixed incomes. By giving to CAFE, you're not just helping one organization - you're investing in a network built to sustain Portland's food system for the long haul.
